How to Create a Name for Your Cleaning Business

Before you open the doors of your cleaning business you not only need equipment and supplies, you need a name for your business. The name of your company will be the first thing prospective clients see - whether that is in the phone book, on your company car, in an ad, or on a website. The name symbolizes what your cleaning business represents. So it is important to spend some time on choosing a name that not only fits your cleaning business, but also presents a positive image to customers, suppliers and employees.

Canning Supplies

The easiest way to name your business it to use your own name or initials, such as Joe Smith's Cleaning. This provides a personal touch, is easy to remember, and if you have a proven track record in the business, it can attract customers. However, if your plan is to one day sell your business, you might want to consider something less personal.

Canning Supplies

Instead of using your name or initials, you may want to think of descriptive or suggestive wording for your business name. When going this route begin by brainstorming key words or phrases that have something to do with the business: clean, cleaning, squeaky clean, house cleaning, commercial cleaning, janitorial services, etc. Write down as many words as you can think of and use a thesaurus to create more wording possibilities.

You can also use words that describe the benefits your clients will get from using your service: spotless, spic-n-span, dust free, immaculate, etc. Take the words from your two lists and start combining them into various business names: Sparkling Waters Cleaning Company, A1 Janitorial Services, APlus Cleaning, Spic-n-Span Cleaning. As most businesses also use a tag line or motto, look through your list to see if any of your potential names suggest possibilities. For example, "Sparkling Waters Cleaning - Your floors will look like sparkling waters".

Try out different names and combinations and then judge the names by the following:

- Is it easy to pronounce?

- Is it concise?

- Is it easy to remember?

- Is it distinct?

- Does it convey the message you want your customers to see?

- Is it pleasant to hear and repeat over and over again? - Is it something you can stand behind?

Before you can begin using your business name, check to see if the name is already trademarked. Do an Internet search at the USPTO (U.S. Patent and Trademark Office) at http://www.uspto.gov . Then check with your local secretary of state to see if anyone else in your state has already registered that name. Once you have decided if the name is available and can represent your business, run it by family and friends to get their reaction.

The business name is the flag that can wave down potential customers. Once you have decided on a name it will most likely be with you throughout the life of the business. Putting the time into researching a suitable name for your cleaning business is one way to get your business off and running in the right direction.

Cleaning a Mattress After Bed-Wetting

The best way of cleaning a mattress after bed-wetting is to wash it in bath-tub with warm water and a mild detergent and dry it under the sun, although this would take more than 2 days to dry. In the evening toss the mattress to the other side which would not have dried. Putting the mattress in a washing machine drier could be hazardous. Use urine gone to remove the urine odors and stains instantly. This is a spray that gives out a fantastic smell. Thus this is one of the easiest and most convenient ways to get rid of the bed wetting stains. If you are very particular about it, it is better that you follow this route.

Canning Supplies

Urine-off also helps you to get rid of urine odour and other related issues. Although not dirt cheap it is worth trying. Using this method will also be a great help for you. This method is also an easy to follow method which will very quickly help you in getting rid of the urine stains and smell.

Canning Supplies

Cleaning a mattress after bed-wetting is an ardent task. If the mattress is not attended to immediately by taking the necessary precautions; dampness and urine odor with encourage bed-bugs and other insects to feast on your mattress and create unnecessary havoc when you are sleeping on it.

Hydrogen peroxide if used in the right way could create wonders on your mattress; it takes away the smell and the stains in just a few seconds.

Cover your mattress with a plastic sheet and avoid embarrassment and discomfort. But this should be absorbed before it trickles and overflows over some other surface. Cleaning a vinyl sheet is child's play. Wiping the cover with a disinfectant is probably the easiest and the fastest way. These vinyl sheets work out economical, can easily be cleaned, are durable, no one can guess unless told about vinyl mattress protector being used. This cover thus saves a plenty of time, work and energy and saves one from discomfort, embarrassment and inconvenience. But never put the vinyl cover in the washing machine drier. Diapers would also limit the cleaning up process and avoid unnecessary stains and odour.

The best way to make the child responsible and conscious of his action would be to take his help while cleaning up the mattress after bed-wetting, and also by asking him to place fresh sheets over the bed. Another thing that can be of great value to you in this regard would be the bed wetting alarm. If your child is in the habit of bed wetting, use bed wetting alarms to get rid of these issues. Bed wetting alarms have proved themselves to be really helpful to parents in this regard.

Barbecue Cleaning Made Simple

During the early part of the year, a journey around the garden leaves us looking at the remains of last years outdoor cooking activities. Often, our grills are left outside in the elements, uncovered, and in many cases have seen far better days.

Canning Supplies

It is this time of year that we start to think about cooking our favourite barbecue food outside during the warmer months with our friends and family, but before we are ready to start throwing charcoal and fire-lighters onto the barbecue, it is time to turn our attention to cleaning our cooking hardware in order to get things off to a hygienic start.
BBQ cleaning methods

Canning Supplies

Wire brushing

A stiff wire brush is a huge help in cleaning your grill. Simply give your rack a thorough scrubbing before and after each use. If you have used oil to coat your rack, getting the grill clean should be easy with a brush alone. Brass-bristle brushes are especially good for cleaning porcelain-coated grills since they won't damage the porcelain.

Grill Stones

Grill stones are specially designed to help get grease and stuck-on food off of your grill. They look similar to a large pumice stone with a handle to help make scrubbing easier and is also an excellent heat convector like volcanic rock, ceramic tiles etc. The main difference with a grill stone is that it has no holes, and because of this feature, it greatly reduces the chance of flare-ups and poor cooking. Grill stones are capable of withstanding incredible heat, up to 2000 degrees Fahrenheit. Grill stones are ideal for use on most shapes and sizes of grill as the stones design allows it to work with almost any grill format.

Burning off

This is one of the most common methods of cleaning BBQ grills/grates. All you have to do is leave your barbecue on after cooking once all your food has been removed. Once you have done this for around quarter of an hour, allow the grill to cool down for around 5 minutes and then use an old trowel, or flat piece of metal and gently scrape both sides of the grill to remove the sticky hard residue. Please be aware that ceramic grills can get damaged very easily if too much force is applied with sharp objects, so be careful with your choice of tools.

If you have an old metal kitchen utensil, such as an egg-flipper, these are ideal tools to make the job safer and easier.

However, you should be careful that this method is not prohibited by the grill manufacturer in order that you don't accidentally void your warranty.

Please ensure your own safety if you use this method by wearing a suitable pair of cooking mitts, or specialised heat resistant gloves.

Soaking

If all else fails, letting your grill racks soak in warm water will help loosen stubborn dirt and food remnants. This can be good for getting the edges of your racks, which are often difficult to scrub properly, really clean.

Oiling the grill

A good way to reduce the pain of cleaning a barbecue is to prevent the worst of the residue from sticking to the grill in the first place. To do this, coat your rack with a layer of oil before you start to cook. This will help you to keep your food from burning and sticking to the grill and will also make cleaning the grill afterwards much easier. Remember to only spray oil onto a cold grill. Spraying onto a fire or hot grill will cause the oil to flare up and could cause serious injury.

Steam cleaning

If you use your barbecue on several occasions throughout the year why not invest in a steam cleaner? This will speed up the time taken to clean your barbecue after use and can be very effective indeed; therefore if you are fed up with scrubbing to remove the BBQ residue, an investment in a steam cleaner can be very useful and time saving.

When you having finished cooking your food, soak an old newspaper in water and place it on top of your warmed grill with the lid firmly shut. After about three quarters of an hour, open the lid and wipe off the residue. Don't let the newspaper sit on the grill rack for too long, as it will dry out and create even more work for you.

Preventative measures to keep your BBQ clean

Using a cover on your barbecue

The number one way to help keep your barbecue clean is to simply purchase, or make, a cover to place on your unit while it is not in use. In order to give your barbecue some protection from the elements it's a good idea to cover it with a plastic sheet, or preferably a manufacturers cover that is specifically designed to do the job properly as they generally have a tighter fit and are more effective.

During the winter months you may also remove the grill and store it in a dry place away from the damp and the elements. This will decrease the speed at which the rust forms, and you will benefit the most by doing this in conjunction with the oiling method mentioned above.

This helps to inhibit rust during the months when your barbecue is not in regular use.

The foil "tray"

Now that you have the basics of cleaning the grill covered, you should now turn your attention to cleaning the internals of the barbecue.

After several uses, there is a fair amount of gunk left at the bottom that hasn't benefited particularly from being left outside in the elements. Over time, this build-up can become unhygienic as well as an additional chore for you to deal with.

Charcoal grills suffer the most from this, and the best way to deal with it without spending a great deal of money is to first clean the inside of the barbecue properly by removing the hard and dry residue first using an old dustpan a brush (something all of us should have in the garage somewhere), and then removing the stuck-on dirt from the edges of the grill using general household cleaners. There are plenty of specific BBQ cleaners available, though these can cost two or three times as much as regular household cleaners. Feel free to give them a try, though from experience, regular cleaners perform the task adequately.

Simply spray on a decent amount of the fluid and allow it to soak in properly for around 10 minutes, then gently scrape off the worst of the build-up with a plastic scraper. Once you have got this far you are ready to lay in the kitchen foil.

Use a decent quality kitchen foil, the thicker the better, and triple layer it and turn in the edges so it looks like a tray. Place this into the bottom of your grill, and then add about a quarter-inch deep layer of sand into it. This will help to absorb the fat and excess juices that drain from the grill during cooking, and make your life MUCH easier in the long run.

After several uses, simply remove the whole tray and discard it. Give the inside of the grill a quick brush and wipe, and insert another of your home-made foil trays to keep your BBQ clean for the next few uses.

If you don't mind spending a little extra money, you can use a catering foil tray and dispose of it after every few uses... just use common sense and get rid of it when it appears well past its best.

Another tip you can try, is to pour leftover coffee on the grill. Clean off with a dry cloth. For a really good clean, spray the grill with your regular oven cleaner and leave it in a plastic garbage bag overnight. Hose it down the next day, and you should have a gleaming grill that is ready to use.

You can also add vinegar or dish washing lotion to the water for additional cleaning power.

Another well-used grill cleaning method is to simply rub the grill in the sand. This will remove most of the grease, etc. Once you have done this, hose down the grill. Depending on how caked the grill is, you may have to repeat this process 2 or 3 or times, but it is worth the effort.

Gas taps often become hard to use during the colder months, causing plastic knobs to crack and in the worst cases, break. Remove the plastic knobs and spray the area with a light oil to loosen them. You can also try using a small amount of machine oil to each tap and then cover them with a light grease to prevent the oil from escaping.

If one or more of your burners doesn't produce a strong blue flame then it may be because a gas jet has become clogged.

If you lift the burner out of the barbecue you will see small brass nozzles called venturis. These are like a small raised nut with a tiny hole through them. They can be simply removed with a small spanner. If you can't clear the blockage, buy new nozzles ones from a specialist supplier.

Insects tend to nest inside venturis when they are not in use, and the openings can become blocked. Use a venturi brush to clean the openings of the venturis. If you won't be using your grill for a long time, consider using some venturi covers to prevent anything from getting inside.

Reconnect the gas supply and check the connections by coating them with a 1:1 mix of dishwasher liquid and water. Any failings in the gas supply will be easily detected at this point and you will know that you will need to do something about repairing it. You can start off by tightening the connections or replacing the seals, and if this doesn't work, then you should replace the faulty unit as per the manufacturers instructions or return it to your local service centre.

Barbecues with wooden trolleys can be kept in fine fettle by re-oiling them once a year. All you have to do is give the trolley a gently sanding with some high grit paper and then use a suitable furniture oil or a specially formulated barbecue trolley oil. This will not only soak through oil stains on the top of your trolley but help prevent new stains from forming.

Volcanic rocks need care too, if you use them. Ensure that you clean or renew them every year as they always become clogged with fat and oil. Remember to discard the old sand from the drip tray, clean the tray and give it a spray of cooking oil before lining it with aluminium foil. Place new washed sand on top of the foil to help keep it clean.

If your volcanic rocks are showing signs of cracking, you can replace them you may consider replacing them with porcelain briquettes. These disc-shaped "rocks" are less porous than volcanic rocks and they are considerably easier to keep clean.

If you live near the sea or in an area where the salt-air density is high, please note that will need to take extra time and precautions to ensure that your grill is not unduly subjected to the elements which will invariably lead to failing components and rust.

Wash the outer surface periodically with fresh water and dry it off straight away for the best results.

Christmas Sales Presto 1781 23-Quart Aluminum Pressure Cooker/Canner Overview

Pressure canning is the only method recommended safe by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for low-acid foods. Doubles as a boiling water canner for preserving fruits, jams, jellies, pickles and salsa in pint and half pint jars. Also handy as a large capacity pressure cooker. Constructed of warp-resistant, heavy-gauge aluminum for fast, even heating. Works on regular and smooth-top ranges. Deluxe pressure dial gauge registers the complete range of processing pressures. This precise measurement is especially important at higher altitudes. Air vent/cover lock allows pressure to build up only when the cover is closed properly and prevents the cover from opening until pressure is safely reduced. Liquid capacity: 23 quarts (21.8 liters).

Christmas Sales Presto 1781 23-Quart Aluminum Pressure Cooker/Canner Specifications

The USDA recommends pressure canning as the only safe method for low-acid foods such as vegetables, meats, and poultry. The Presto 23-quart pressure canner is more than adequate for any home canning needs. It's a professional-quality tool, made of heavy-duty aluminum, with stay-cool handles and a strong-lock steel lid. An accompanying rack fits down into the pot to keep jars up off the bottom, so that liquid can circulate underneath. And it can do double duty as a large pressure cooker. It's easy to cook healthfully with pressure cookers, since the food retains so much more of its nutrients and flavor.

The sturdy lid locks down during canning or cooking; an inner sealing ring keeps the steam in. In addition to a pop-up pressure indicator and a simple steam release mechanism, there is an overpressure plug that will let off steam if it builds up excessively. The pressure dial gauge gives an accurate reading so that pressure can be kept constant during canning. This pressure canner is also a cooker that's useful for weeknight dinners or for any meal that needs to come together quickly. An accompanying booklet contains more than 50 recipes, ranging from basic soup stocks to stews and pot roasts--even sweets like English Plum Pudding or Brown Bread! Tenderize lean cuts of beef or pork, or cook chicken, fish, or vegetables faster than you can in a microwave, and without losing moisture.

Nonabrasive cleansers are best for cleaning this aluminum pressure cooker, though occasional use of a fine metal polish will help the exterior keep its shine. The lid of the Presto 23-quart pressure canner is not immersible. In addition, the sealing ring should be removed after each use to allow cleaning of the inside rim of the lid. The dial gauge is delicate; detailed care instructions are found in the accompanying booklet. The vent pipe is simple to keep clean with a small brush or pipe cleaner, and both the air vent/cover lock and the overpressure plug are removable. The pressure cooker measures 14 inches in diameter (17 inches including handles) and 15-1/2 inches tall (including lid). Presto guarantees this pressure cooker with an extended 12-year warranty. A detailed instruction and recipe booklet is included; special safety issues that pertain to pressure cookers are clearly explained. --Garland Withers

A Sample Fundraising Letter You Can Copy

If you've been asked to write a letter to help with fundraising for a group or charity that you're involved with, you may be staring at a blank piece of paper wondering just what to write.

Canning Supplies

Here's an actual letter that was used to raise a substantial sum towards a refit of church equipment and was sent to local trusts and grant-making bodies.

Canning Supplies

It's important to keep your letter to just one page, with supporting information of no more than two pages. Include one photo if you wish and if it's relevant.

Don't resort to begging, but write an informative letter which helps the donor to understand what your projects aims and goals are.

Although this is an actual letter, names and information has been changed, for obvious reasons.

Dear Mr Bentley

I am writing to Bentley Charity Trust on behalf of Finedown Baptist Church, as your guidelines indicate that you offer support for churches.

Finedown is a rapidly growing town situated in central Flintshire. It has a thriving business centre, with some of the top financial companies in the country being based locally.

We have a thriving youth group for local young people. We have a 68 members and offer services in both the morning and evening.

The church building is used by a number of different local groups because of its good acoustics, this includes the Watley Moor singers and the Big Down band. We also host activities such as yoga, fitness club and local coffee mornings for the local community.

We refitted our entrance seven years ago. However, the entrance doors are now in need of substantial repair if we are to be able to continue using them and welcoming in the community. The estimated cost of this work is £9995.

We have already raised the sum of £7900 through our fundraising efforts but need a further £2095 to be able to carry out the necessary work.

As a Trust that is interested in supporting and preserving buildings which are of value to the local community, we would be most grateful if you could consider assisting us with this project.

Please feel free to call me on 1234 678910 if you would like any further information.

Yours faithfully,

Jen Carter

Chair of the Fundraising Committee

Do ensure that you print this on headed paper, if you have it.

It's important that it's signed by the person whose name is on the bottom of the letter, this is not the time to be in a hurry and "pp" the letter on someone elses behalf.

If you would like an acknowledgement that your application for funding has been received, add a stamped, self-addressed postcard or envelope.

Only send off letter to trusts that offer funding in your area and your type of project.

Once you've sent off your applications, be patient! Most of these boards only meet every two or three months, so it may be some time until you hear whether or not you've been successful.

If you are offered a grant, always write and say thank you. Write again once the project is up and running to let them know of your progress.

  • High efficiency, quick boiling performance
  • Rust-proof aluminum rack included
  • Easy-to-clean, dishwasher-safe

Christmas Sales Granite Ware 11-1/2 Quart Covered Preserving Canner with Rack Overview

Six generations of Americans have been using Granite Ware canners to preserve fruits and vegetables. This mini canner is perfect for preserving jams, jellies and salsa. Holds seven pint jars. Comes with rack for easy lifting jars from canner. Granite Ware's high efficiency, quick boiling performance combined with its modest cost make it ideal for canning. The dark porcelain surface and steel core absorbs energy and evenly distributes heat to the contents. Porcelain enamel is the result of fusing powdered glass to a substrate by firing, usually between 750 and 850 degrees Celsius. The powder melts and flows and hardens to a durable vitreous coating on a carbon steel core. It creates a smooth, hard finish that won’t burn and resists staining. It’s also non -porous so it won’t trap odors or food particles and provides a low coefficient of friction – meaning that it cleans up easily and, it is corrosion and chemically resistant so it will last a long time. When fired, the vessel is placed on pins so the bottom and sides are hardened during the firing process into one smooth laminated glass surface. You may notice slight pin indentations where the glass has flowed around the pin that supports the base during firing. The pin marks do not compromise the finish or performance of the vessel in any way but you should take additional care in handling if using on glass top stove. 11 1/2qt capacity.

Although the calorie count of the avocado is large, there being 165 calories in l00g (40z), it is of excellent nutritional worth

Canning Supplies

The avocado is also rich in vitamin 86, with an impressive 530 micrograms per l00g (40z). There is evidence that the leaves and fruits of the avocado have been shown to contain a substance known to be somewhat toxic to goats, rabbits, horses and canaries. There is no evidence that there is any danger to man, but for the sake of prudence it is best to have no more than one avocado a day whether juiced or fresh.

Happily the fate of the unfortunate canary need not affect the use of avocado juice in the therapy because the best effect is found when the juice is employed as an external application to the skin. Avocado juice is a good way of having a balanced quantity of the oil of avocado. The oil is second only to lanolin in being the most penetrating oil known when applied to the human skin.

Yet, unlike lanolin which is thought by many experts to be the cause of more cases of sensitivity to cosmetics than any other ingredient, avocado is emollient and innocuous without any known sensitizing effects. It can therefore be used externally as the ideal treatment for soothing sensitive skins. Avocado reduces ultra violet light and is a useful sun screening lotion for use prior to moderate exposure to the suns rays.

Home Canning - What is This About Headspace?

If this is your first attempts at Home Canning you may be asking yourself, "What Is This About Headspace?" A good starting point would be to define headspace: this is the "space" from the top of canning jar (where the lid fits) to the point where the food or liquid fills the remainder of the jar.

Canning Supplies

What's the Big Deal About Headspace?

Canning Supplies

You probably already know that there are a few rules to follow when it comes to safely canning foods. But did you know that leaving headspace allows for the expansion of foods and the bubbling of liquids during the processing of your home canning project? What if I told you that without the correct amount of headspace your jars would not seal properly; were you aware of that? Or that if too much space is allowed the food at the top of the canning jar may darken due to air remaining in the top of the jar after processing.

Having the right amount of space at the top of the jars allows a vacuum to form while processing. The lid will then be able to seal upon completion of the method.

Recommended Amount of Headspace

Generally the amount of headspace needed varies based on what you are canning. Below is a quick guideline to follow:

Allow 1 inch for low acid foods such as vegetables and meats Allow 1/2 inch for high acid foods like tomatoes and fruits Allow 1/4 inch for jams, jellies, pickles and relishes

Now imagine for a moment what your canned foods will look like after you've finished. Can't you just smell the aroma of that fresh jam you preserved as you pop open the lid and spread some on a hot piece of toast for breakfast? Doesn't it please you to see the delight on your family's faces each time they take a bite. You are sure to gain respect and admiration for the gift basket full of your home canned goodies you give to a co-worker for their birthday.

What are you waiting for? Get started on those home canning projects now. Your family and friends will be glad you did.

Enzymes and Aging

Did you know that all chemical reactions that take place within the human body require enzymes? There are two classes of enzymes digestive and metabolic. Today we will concentrate on digestive enzymes. Digestive enzymes are catalysts that help to breakdown our food. Each type of food has its own enzyme to digest it. The digestive glands manufacture the needed enzymes.

Canning Supplies

Some scientists now believe that we are born with a limited number of enzymes. Once we use them up we die. Fortunately fresh raw fruits and vegetables are loaded with enzymes. These enzymes help our bodies digest our food. Thus our bodies don't have to use up our limited store of enzymes. When eating and digesting a steak for example the body must contribute enzymes to the digestive process. This consumes some of the finite enzyme supply.

Canning Supplies

Unfortunately, when you don't replenish your body with naturally occurring enzymes found in raw foods you age more rapidly. This theory might be why animals on restricted calorie diets live longer and are more youthful. They have not squandered their limited supply of enzymes on digestion.

Since enzyme levels decline as we age, we must eat as many raw and living foods as possible. Cooking, baking, frying and excessive heat destroys enzymes. Lightly cook or steam your food to retain as many enzymes as possible.

Many foods are high in enzymes. Raw pineapple contains bromelain a protein-digesting enzyme. Papaya contains papain another proteolytic enzyme. Bananas, cabbage, mangos, sprouts and avocados are just a few high enzyme foods. Eat these foods raw since enzymes are destroyed by cooking or canning.

Our busy lifestyle has contributed to the trend of using easy to prepare, packaged, canned and frozen foods at the expense of raw fruits and vegetables. Foods that are designed to last on the store shelves without refrigeration are loaded with preservatives and of course lack vital enzymes. Heat, high temperatures and pasteurization used to preserve foods kills the enzymes. Avoid these foods as much as possible.

Invest in a juicer and juice raw fruits and vegetables. Many health food stores now sell super green foods. These are almost as good as the real food.

Instead of eating over processed junk food opt for a food that is as close to raw as possible. Given the choice of an apple or applesauce choose the apple. Start with eating a meal that is 50% raw. A large salad with your meal will go a long way toward the fifty percent. Gradually increase the percentage of organic raw, living foods at each meal. Challenge yourself to eat as many meals of only raw foods as possible. This is one of the most healthy diet plans you could envision.

Cooking Beans in Pressure Cooker

OK, so you have one of these amazing pots and now you are wondering about cooking beans in a pressure cooker. Actually this is one of the simplest things you can do. It is fast, easy and very tasty.

Canning Supplies

Once you have your beans fully cooked, they are ready to be used in a wide variety or recipes, even recipes calling for canned beans. They are soft and tasty and all you need to remember is to adjust the seasoning.

Canning Supplies

So here goes with the basic method:

I always start by soaking the beans in hot water for an hour. Place the beans in a suitable bowl, pour boiling water over them and soak for an hour.

After the soaking process, drain them and place them in your pot. Cover them with water, up to a few inches above them and close your pot. Now you can place it on the stove and cook it at the highest pressure for about thirty minutes and you're done. You are now ready to make any dish you desire with them.

You will be surprised at how soft and tasty they will be. Now you can use any of your favorite recipes to make tasty bean dishes. Our family particularly loves a nice thick and tasty soup. I add lots of stuff such as fried bacon, onions, potatoes, sweet potatoes and veggies to it.

All you have to do with it now is cook it for about another fifteen minutes to thirty minutes and your soup is ready. The time will depend on the amount of veggies you add and how finely you have chopped them.

One very important thing I have to draw your attention to is, never add salt to them until they are completely soft. If you add the salt before that, you will never get them really soft no matter how long you cook them!

So, as you can see, cooking beans in a pressure cooker is really fast and easy.

Crisis Preparedness - Start Making Your Action Plan

We take so much for granted these days. Due to specializations, our lives for the most part have become extremely easy and comfortable in comparison to decades gone by. We have become dependent on the support received from a large community, state, nation and world to provide our food, clothing and shelter. Each of us may have skills in our own narrow field, but what we don't know is left in the hands of others to do for us.

Canning Supplies

How many people actually grow their own food (and I mean ALL of it)? And if you had to, could you make your own clothing? Would you have the necessary tools, fabric and skill?

Canning Supplies

What about water, and power and sewer - what if our utility services were not available? And how about medical care? Dental care? Vehicle repair and maintenance?

In uncertain times, a wise person makes preparations. They know that security comes from being independent and accept responsibility for themselves and their family, taking steps to become as self reliant as possible.

So where to start? It's a big undertaking if this is the first time you've really thought about the possibility becoming self-reliant. It will take some thought and effort, expense and some basic lifestyle changes. It's important, however, that you realize that it doesn't have to be done all at one time. You just need to get started - today.

INFORMATION - Make A Plan

The first step is to come up with a plan. Something this big cannot be done without a roadmap. Haphazard attempts will only lead to overspending and missing a major piece of the puzzle, which will only show up in the event of a true disaster.

ASSESS POSSIBILITIES - Prepare For Specific Events

It is easier to make preparations when you know what the potential crisis might be. Take time to list the possibilities and what would happen if they occurred. How would they affect you and your family? What can you do to lesson their impact?

Here are some ideas to get you started:

Natural Disasters - earthquake, tornado, winter storm, drought, flooding, fire Income Limiting Disasters - business closing, firing/layoff, physical injury, death of income-earning member of family Government Disturbances - government controls, deficits, hyper-inflation, price controls, rationing Civil Disturbances - breakdown in law and order, rioting, utility/transportation disruption, looting Terror Attack - biological, chemical, nuclear attack, invasion, martial law

While it's not prudent to dwell on the worst case scenarios, it's only logical that if you prepared for the absolute worst, then you will be amply prepared for all events. However, cost and time are important factors. My advice is to focus on the most likely in the beginning and then build on your plan from there.

For instance, if you live in an area that experiences tornadoes on a regular basis (like we do in tornado alley) then a good investment would be a storm shelter, emergency provisions like non-perishable food and water and medical supplies.

If you live in an area prone to winter storms, an emergency kit in your car, complete with water, food/snacks, blankets, etc... would definitely be at the top of the preparations list.

COST - Finding the Funds

Most people don't have extra money just sitting around for emergency preparations, so you may need to be creative. Here are some tips that can help you get started with limited funds:

Compare prices and shop the ads - most businesses have sales, liquidations and close-outs on a regular basis. If you carefully watch for these sales, you can pick up many items for prices well below retail.

Discount/Wholesale/Factory Outlet Stores - these are becoming much more prevalent and can help you stock up for less.

Buy In Quantity - this can be a key money saver. Bulk is almost always cheaper in just about everything, particularly food. Keep in mind, however, that bulk food products are sometimes heavy and difficult to store. Rotating becomes more challenging as well. While there are definite price advantages, weigh the pro's and con's of small packaging versus large ones... (example: can you actually eat 80 ounces of canned beans in a sitting if you don't have refrigeration to store the left-overs?)

Garage Sales/Flea Markets - finding things such as a camping stove, tarps, gas cans, etc ... at a yard sale can save lots of money. Take advantage of your neighbor's desire to clean out the garage and get some of the things you need for pennies on the dollar.

Nickel ads/Craigslist - keep your eye open for great deals in ads such as "Thrifty Nickel" or even your local newspaper. Search your area online Craigslist for items as well.

Auctions/Estate Sales - many times garage sale items are one step from the landfill. Auctions/Estate Sales, however, are normally entire household sales of items that were still in use but no longer needed due to a death in the family, a move overseas, etc.

Grow A Garden - there are so many benefits to this one that I couldn't even begin to name them all. It is the most key step to self-sufficiency and control over your own livelihood by growing your own food.

Create A Budget - actually sit down with pencil and paper and evaluate what you spend each month. Most people can find extra funds to place towards their plan if they really want to. It may require eating out less, or passing up some video rentals or social activities, but it can be done.

EDUCATION - Learn What You Need To Know NOW

It is always wise to develop new skills on a regular basis. Start with things like gardening and harvesting your own food. Canning/preserving your produce is a natural second step. There are lots of things that you can learn now that will be helpful in the long run:

First Aid - start with a simple first aid course, then advance to CPR and even EMT Basics. Midwives' training is also advantageous in the event that you are called upon to assist with the delivery of a baby. Any medical training would be highly desirable.

Carpentry - you may not need to go as far as building your own house, but having some general carpentry skills could prove very helpful. Learn how to safely and properly use tools and how to do basic maintenance/repairs to your home.

Cooking - so you know how to cook? But can you cook on an open fire or a wood-burning stove? Learning different ways to prepare food (other than microwaving or popping something in the oven) is a good idea, and it will take some practice to get it right.

Self-Defense - while it's not a comfortable topic, it's a realistic one. When times get hard, people get desperate. It's important to learn how to take care of yourself, your family and your property. This includes learning how to use a gun as well as hand-to-hand combat techniques such as martial arts or self-defense. Check out your local YMCA or fitness centers for classes in your area.

Sewing - you may be able to have extra clothes as part of your plan (which I highly recommend) but there is sure to come a time when you have to mend a tear, patch a hole or replace a button. Having the right tools on hand and some idea where to start will make your life a whole lot easier.

Alternate Trade - you may be the best computer programmer in the tri-county area, but without power, no one really cares about their PC's anymore. What they may need more is someone who can change out an alternator in their pickup or dig and case a water well. Money will be of little value if there's no stores. Barter and trade of products or services will become accepted as the new "currency" in an economic breakdown. Any new trade you learn becomes a bargaining chip in your survival.

Basic Survival Skills - in the very worst case scenario, you may be called upon to build a shelter, find clean water and feed yourself with limited or no means. If your particular disaster situation leaves you stranded and waiting to be rescued, it is imperative that you learn the 5 basic survival skills: Building fire, shelter, signaling for help, finding food and clean water, and first aid.

REFERENCE BOOKS - Build Your Library of Knowledge

Having a good home reference library is recommended. You may not know how to do everything immediately, but if you have books that teach you the necessary skills, you can always reference them when needed.

Look for survival books to get you started. There are many crisis preparedness and survival guides written for a variety of situations. Pick the ones that discuss topics that would most likely occur in your area. For instance, if you live in Missouri, I doubt that you are terribly concerned about hurricanes... but winter storms are always a possibility.

When you are at an estate sale and run across a stack of nursing college books for 50 cents each, consider adding them as well. Most of the medical basics are the same, even if the books are old. You can always supplement them with an up-to-date general medical guide.

There are many books these days on the topics of sewing and canning that can easily guide you through the steps when needed.

Each of the tips above could easily be expanded into articles of their own, but this will get you started as you make your plans. There are so many factors and so many unknowns that make crisis preparedness a challenging undertaking. It can be done with a good plan and a strong desire to be ahead of the game. Don't get caught unprepared.

14 Tips to Grow Happy Tomato Plants

Just dropping in for a quick list of successful tomato tips.
DETERMINATE tomato plants produce a heavier yield at one time and are best for canning. INDETERMINATE tomatoes bear fruit throughout the summer and tend to sprawl. Best for continual eating enjoyment. Transplant tomatoes when all danger of frost is past. Put in well drained soil, and mix in some humus or compost if needed. Putting plastic jugs over the plants creates a greenhouse effect and can help them grow faster. Just keep an eye on daytime temperatures. Transplant on a cool evening to prevent wilt and transplant shock. Space plants two feet apart in rows three feet apart. Snip off bottom leaves and plant DEEP. Leave about 4-6 inches of crown above the ground with the leaves on. The plant shoots roots from the entire stem underground, developing a better system. "Mud in" your new tomatoes. Dig the hole three times larger than the root ball, place the plant in, and fill halfway up with water. Then carefully pack dirt around the plant. Always "side dress" your new tomatoes. Make a ring around the plant about one foot away, sprinkle 10-10-10 garden fertilizer in the ring, and water well. READ THE DIRECTIONS on all fertilizers so you don't burn your plants. Keep the plants watered according to weather conditions. Don't overwater, as this results in poor aeration and stem rot. Mulch if desired. Keep the area weed free, but don't hoe too close to the plant. This breaks off the roots that supply water to the fruit. Before they start setting fruit, dust the plants about every ten days with a good combination insecticide and fungicide. Do this before they show symptoms, because it's difficult to stop blight once it's started. If blight does infest your plants, DO NOT plant tomatoes in the same area the next year. Two common problems with tomato plants are "leaf roll" and "white shoulders." Leaf roll is caused by too much fertilizer or herbicide spray. White shoulders appear on the tomatoes and are caused by extremely high temperatures. Plants may be allowed to sprawl over the ground, but they produce better fruit if tied to stakes at least four feet tall. All indeterminate plants should be staked. Before first frost, pull up your tomatoes and hang them upside down in a protected place. Many of the green tomatoes will ripen. Keep dry or mold will occur.

Canning Supplies

These tips will keep your tomato plants happy, and you happy, all summer long.

Christmas Sales Columbian Home 0707-1 Granite Ware 21-1/2-Quart Steel/Porcelain Water-Bath Canner with Rack Overview

Six generations of Americans have been using Granite Ware canners to preserve fruits and vegetables. The dark porcelain surface and steel core absorbs energy and evenly distributes heat to the contents. The result is a canner that heats rapidly. The canner is perfect for preserving tomatoes or fruit, processing 7 quart jars at a time. Comes with rack for easy lifting jars from canner. Granite Ware's high efficiency, quick boiling performance combined with its modest cost make it ideal for canning. The pin marks do not compromise the finish or performance of the vessel in any way. Can be used on gas or electric stove tops. Not recommended for glass stove tops. 21 1/2 qt capacity.

Tips on Cleaning Oil Painting

An advice on cleaning any oil painting tats covered in dust or yellowed varnish has to come with a qualified disclaimer. More than other types of rough and ready projects, cleaning oil paintings need to be really trusted to specialist conservators. However, if you're painting is not that old, not offensively precious, or not too significant, there are a few likely ways to make it look brighter and spot less yourself. In addition, changing true antiques almost forever decreases their value, whether or not they look better to you.

Canning Supplies

If it seems that your painting is little older, evaluate whether the paint is in good shape but the varnish is quite aged. In this case, try applying a gentle solvent called conservation liquid. Art supply stores may sell an "emulsion" planned to clean and take away varnish. There is forever a chance that the solvent would also damage or take away the oil paint. If you are ready to risk this option, wipe the mix with a cotton swab very carefully. Try spot-testing one bend before moving on to the whole canvas. Work in an area with sufficient ventilation.

Canning Supplies

For recent paintings, your problem is more probable a build-up of dirt, smoke, pet hair, dander, and as well bacterial or any fungal growth. In this case, ensure none of the paint is prepared to come off the canvas or board, meaning that it doesn't show any cracks or any flakes. Then you could cautiously dust the surface with an extremely spongy and dry bristle brush, such as a baby toothbrush or shaving cream brush.

When the surface is muggy, dirty, or oily, you might want to take the attack a step further and in fact uses a gentle detergent solution. Again, usually speaking, oil and water must never mix, as moisture could for sure damage both the canvas and the impasto. Proceeding with care, use brand new fiber cloths dipped in a mixture of dish soap and humid water. Lightly spot the surface, but do not scrub, clean, or rub at the painting. At no point should you sink any part of the painting, nor allow so much damp that it drips or pools.
