One of the best homemade garden gifts to give is a garden gift basket. Instead of trying to buy one, why not make your own and individualize it for the person getting it. It's a thoughtful gift that will be used and you will be remembered for giving it.

Several years ago I received a garden gift basket from my best friend. It was very special and thoughtful as she doesn't garden. For over 10 years I had enjoyed and admired her Mother's Picante Sauce recipe and couldn't get her to share it. The basket contained the recipe, plus the seed packs for each of the items in the recipe along with an old garden trowel that had belonged to her Dad and a wooden spoon from her kitchen. The basket was perfect for carrying fresh harvested herbs, flowers, and vegetables into the kitchen. It was one of the most thoughtful gifts I have ever received!

There are some "don'ts" when it comes to gift baskets.

Don't give an item that you know the person won't use Don't give an item that you want for yourself, hoping they'll give it to you Don't include an item that you didn't give any thought to Don't give a flimsy item that will break

If you are a seasoned gardener, you know what works and what doesn't. Think about that as you decide what kind of garden gifts will fill the gift basket.

For ideas of garden gifts, check out garden shops, greenhouse supply shops, and hardware stores. Often times you'll find items on sale or clearance. Take a good look at theses items prior to buying them. Take a look at their quality to make sure it isn't flimsy and won't break or bend on its first use. If inexpensive garden gloves, get two or three pairs as it's nice to have more than one pair. Also as you look around can any of these items be made at home?

Another idea is to look in Second Hand Stores for items that can be used as plant containers, gardening tools, and items for gardening art. You may find tools that just need a little cleaning up or oiling and can still be used. Other items may be perfect for garden art. This is the place to look for the ideal basket, box, or container to use as your gift basket.

A covered basket could also be used to carry hand tools, seedlings, packets of seeds, etc to the garden. A large old mailbox could also be used to mount in the garden and hold small hand tools. If the person is a beginner, new to gardening, give them a basket with the basic gardening items as gloves, plant markers that you made, a notebook for a keeping a garden log, sunscreen, garden trowel, etc.

If the person is a seasoned gardener, what items do they frequently use that need to be replaced or need more of, such as special gardening gloves or pruning shears, perhaps a sharpener for their tools, a new kneeling pad, or flats with covers for the greenhouse.

There are many gardening gifts that you can make that are inexpensive and very thoughtful such as plant markers or plant labels, wooden flats, potted plants from dividing your herbs and perennials.

A gift that is the least expensive and the most thoughtful is the garden gift of a Gift Certificate for your time. It could be for so many hours of weeding, tilling, or mowing their yard. It could be to help them design a garden or to plant their garden or build a cold frame.

These make the best gifts as you are giving your time to another person. What could be better than that! There are so many ways to help a gardener. Just make sure you follow through with it!

One more idea is to give garden gifts from your kitchen. Perhaps you made herb vinegars, herb butters, jellies or jam, or an ornamental herb wreath; these would also make great gardening gifts.

A garden gift basket makes a perfect gift all year round for any occasion. Visit Garden Gifts to Please and Delight for an in-depth list and suggestions for more garden gift ideas.
