Q. Can I reuse canning jars year after year?

A. Yes, you can reuse your jars. However, make sure to inspect the jars before each use for chips and cracks. The rim of the jar should be chip free to ensure a proper seal. Avoid using old, colored glass canning jars from past generations as they probably contain lead which was used to create the color.

Q. When canning, how can I avoid my jars from breaking?

A. Never put cold liquid into hot jars or hot liquids into cold jars. When you remove jars from a boiling water canner or pressure canner, place them on a towel and then cover them with another towel. This will allow them to cool slowly and keep any draft from cooler air getting on them.

Q. Where should I store my canned foods?

A. You will want to store your canned foods in a cool, dark place. Both heat and light will reduce the nutritional value of your food in the  jars. Be sure to select a place that is not prone to freezing as this may break the jars.

Q. How long can I store foods sealed in canning jars?

A. It is recommended to use home canned food within one year of canning to get the maximum nutritional value from the food. After one year, the food will start to lose some nutrients.
